Horizon Maths
The Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris facilitates meetings between mathematicians from its laboratories and the industrial world through Horizon Maths, an annual conference on mathematical topics related to industrial issues.
Edition 2025
The 2025 edition of Horizon Maths will take place on Monday May 12, 2025 from 9am to 6pm in the Amphithéâtre Chaudron at ENSCP (11 rue Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris 5e).
Organized by Patrice Bertail (Modal'X, Université Paris-Nanterre), the theme of the conference is: Mathematics and food safety.
Principle
The first Horizon Maths events were co-organized by the Foundation in partnership with a company (EADS in 2010, AREVA in 2011, TOTAL in 2012, GDF SUEZ in 2013, IFP Energies nouvelles in 2014, IBM France in 2015, Huawei in 2017).
In this highly industry-oriented configuration, the major themes around which the presentations are structured are proposed and discussed between the Foundation and the company, who also agree on the choice of speakers from the academic world and industry, and divide up the work between them. The final program is drawn up jointly. The event is generally hosted by the co-organizing company.Since 2018, the conference format has become more flexible. The 2018 edition, while also focusing on industrial applications, was not designed in partnership with a particular company. The 2019 and 2022 editions concerned interactions of mathematics with another scientific discipline (chemistry and astrophysics respectively) in an academic and (to a lesser extent) industrial setting.
In all cases, in addition to the lectures, ample space is given to discussions between participants, enabling them to clarify certain points, go further on the themes addressed or initiate a more in-depth exchange that may continue after the event.
Conferences are filmed, with the agreement of each speaker and his or her company. The videos are then posted on the Foundation's website.
